Dunlop joins programme to commercialise fuel cell power generator

February 21, 2005: Dunlop Aerospace is joining the programme to commercialise the world-leading fuel cell developed by Ceres Power.

Following successful testing of the fuel cell itself, the prototype development programme now underway is focusing on complete power generation units to produce heat and electricity from home boilers, stand-alone generators and other products.

Dunlop will play a key role in the development work with components that exploit the proven ability of the Ceres fuel cell to produce heat and electricity using widely available fuels like LPG and natural gas far more efficiently than at present.

Tapping into existing gas networks will allow a commercial Ceres fuel cell system to be introduced immediately, while providing a clear transition to the hydrogen economy thanks to the cell’s ability to run on hydrogen as well.

Chief Executive Peter Bance said: “Now that we have demonstrated the outstanding performance of our fuel cells, a priority for 2005 is establishing a supply chain for all the other components needed ahead of commercial roll-out. We are delighted that Dunlop, with its expertise and global reach, has agreed to become an important development partner.

Ceres has established early commercial relationships with several leading energy and engineering groups interested in the potential of its fuel cell. They include the global industrial gases giant BOC, which is in partnership trials using bottled gas to generate electricity from the Ceres fuel cell.

Ceres has been described by Prime Minister Tony Blair as a “world leader”, while Energy Minister Mike O’Brien said the company is “at the forefront of the race to make fuel cells a commercially viable technology.”
